A very unusual toy
“Become an archaeologist and dig into the past! Carefully dig into a block of soft clay-like sediment and unearth a 10″ (26 cm) model of the Great Sphinx of Egypt, a mysterious monument with a human head and the body of a lion. The Sphinx was carved out of sandstone more than 4,500 years ago! Restore, paint and preserve your archaeological find! Contents: Excavation block, brushes, excavation tool, paint tablets, booklet ‘How to become an Archaeologist’ instructions.” The educational toy:

Mormon sphinx in the Gilgal Sculpture Garden
The Gilgal Sculpture Garden is a small public city park, located at 749 East 500 South in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. The park is filled with unusual symbolic statuary associated with Mormonism, notably to the Sphinx with Joseph Smith's head. Joseph Smith was the founder of Mormonism and the Latter Day Saints. The park was created by LDS businessman Thomas Battersby Child, Jr. “The Sphinx represents Child’s belief that the answers to life’s great questions cannot be discovered with the intellect, but only through faith. The sphinx is an ancient symbol of riddles and mystery. Joseph Smith’s face symbolizes Child’s conviction that the LDS Priesthood reveals to mankind the answers to life’s mysteries.” gilgalgarden.org/the-sphinx/

Ginger Mick and the Great Sphinx
From a post about covfefe and ferritin by Lavendel : “The Moods of Ginger Mick/Rabbits fergot yer skin!' "I sees me finish!... War? Why, this ain't war! It's ferritin'! An' I'm the bloomin' game. Me skin alone is worth the 'untin' for— That” Ginger Mick is an interesting discovery. His story ticks several boxes: red hair, rabbits, Oz, the Great Sphinx, Turkey, WWI... He is a fictional character. He appears in a book of verses called The Moods of Ginger Mick, which was written by Australian poet C. J. Dennis and published in 1916. ‘Australian poetry’ may seem a bit of an oxymoron! The verse is not easy to understand as it is written in Australian dialect or Strine but there is a glossary at the back. ‘Mick’ is a generic - and rather derogatory - name for an Irishman; C.J. Dennis was of Irish descent. The Moods of Ginger Mick is based on real events. Ginger Mick sells rabbits in the streets of Melbourne then as many young men did he goes off to the Middle East to fight in the war. He is sent to the Pyramids Valley in Egypt for training then to Gallipoli in Turkey. The Sphinx is n the background here:

Australian soldiers in Egypt in WWI
The first men to enlist in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) were sent not to Europe as they had expected but to Egypt for further training and to protect British interests in the Middle East and the Suez Canal. A new theory about the age of the Great Sphinx Avacyn this is for you. A Chinese professor has solved the mystery of the Great Sphinx: “A Chinese professor claims that the Egyptian pyramids, the Parthenon, and other remnants of ancient civilizations in the West, were all faked by Western scholars in order to fabricate an ancient history, and diminish the glory of China. Huang Heqing stated in his lecture that from the 19th to 20th centuries, the West was rampantly forging historical and cultural relics, and spending huge sums of money everywhere from the Mediterranean to India, fabricating fake ancient artefacts. The Pyramids of Khufu, and the Great Sphinx of Giza, were made of concrete, and constructed in the 19th century, Huang claims. taiwanenglishnews.com/chinese-professor-there-were-no-ancient-western-civilizations-just-modern-fakes-made-to-demean-china/How's that for a conspiracy theory! Here is his 'proof': An artist’s depiction of the Great Sphinx of Giza compared with an actual photograph today proves that the Sphinx was constructed in modern times, according to Huang’s theory.

We are not replicas!
“Two stone sphinx statues thought to be replicas turned out to be genuine Ancient Egyptian artifacts and have sold for almost £200,000. The owners of the statues, from Clare, Suffolk, bought the items fifteen years ago and believed they dated from the 18th or 19th century... They were in very bad condition since they were used as garden ornaments and had become covered in moss. A builder had also secured them to the ground with cement and repaired them in the past. It was realised that the ornaments are Ancient Egyptian and likely to be more than 5,000 years old...” www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10081637/Sphinx-garden-statues-auctioned-house-turn-genuine-Egyptian-ariefacts.html“We are off to a museum now. Maybe they will give us a makeover.”

A new sphinx has been found
A rather cute limestone mini-sphinx was unearthed in Egypt earlier this year. It is thought to represent the Emperor Claudius, so dates from circa 50 AD. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-64870562
