You have done the right thing in moving this thread.
Sphinxes have many religious, historic, mythological and archaeological associations, with Ancient Egypt and elsewhere.
They are relevant to the London attraction thread; they appear in artworks, fiction and the world of entertainment...
They really are a cross-board topic.

I plan to start a new thread, focussing purely on the historical side of it. There is a lot more going on than I have realised. I encountered a new theory on the Sphinx earlier today, which is certainly worth considering.
This can stay as a cross-topic thread, which it seems to be best as.

I was watching Guy Ritchie's first SHerlock Holmes film recently, and someone said that the sphinx is believed to be a portal to another dimension.

In what way is it a portal, I wonder...

Giant red sphinx goes into retreat
The largest sphinx in the western hemisphere is a red granite specimen in the Penn Museum in Philadelphia. A huge renovation project that will last for many years has just begun, and the sphinx will not be on display during the gallery makeover. It weighs around 13 tons and was excavated in 1913 from the great temple at Memphis. Rameses II’s sculptors obliterated the original inscriptions so the identity of the pharaoh it was originally created for is unknown. Weathering is responsible for the eradication of the features. What a pity:

Cornwall sphinxes
Cornwall is now a place of interest. It may be remote, but there are a few sphinxes there. Greek-style sphinx at Ince Caste, Saltash: A replica of the Great Sphinx at the former World in Miniature, Goonharvern:

Sphinxes from Franconia in Bavaria
Several Greek-style sphinxes can be seen in the Franconia region of Bavaria. On the Red Bridge in Park Schönbusch, Aschaffenburg: On the castle terraces, Rococo Gardens, Schloss Veitshoechheim and in the Dennenlohe Palace gardens, near Unterschwaningen:

A Victoria Embankment sphinx by day and by night
I like these sphinxes better than any others I have seen, in real life or in pictures. The one facing east isn’t bothered by the snow; maybe he thinks it is sand! The royal colours of purple and gold really suit him.

Sphinxes from The Never-Ending Story The Never-Ending Story film was based on a book by Bavarian writer Michael Ende. It was made by Bavaria Film Studio and filmed in Bavaria. One of the hazards is a Riddle Gate that is guarded by two giant sphinxes with death-ray eyes:

Sphinx on a war memorial in Australia
This rather strange specimen is in the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park New South Wales. It is part of the memorial for people who died in the First World War. It was carved out of sandstone by a returned soldier:

The Brunswig sphinx
Lucien Brunswig is said to have come to the US from his hometown of Munich in Bavaria in 1871. This fine marble specimen is part of the Egyptian-revival style Brunswig Family Mausoleum in the Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans. It was created around 1943.

Sphinx fountain in Paris
This is an unusual specimen of an Egyptian-style sphinx. It is located at the base of the Fontaine du Palmier in Paris. It was originally intended to provide drinking water. It looks to me as though it is crying and being sick - probably as a result of reading all the sugary articles about Meghan Markle!

David Lindsay’s novel Sphinx
David Lindsay is best known for Voyage to Arcturus. He also wrote Sphinx. It is slightly disappointing because the sphinx in the title just refers to a piece of music. This cover is good though:

The sphinxes of Hattusa
Hattusa was the capital of the Hittite Empire; its ruins lie in Turkey. Two winged stone figures said to be 3,000 years old were taken from the Sphinx Gate to Germany for restoration in 1917. They were displayed in two museums in Berlin until Turkey demanded the return first of one then of the other. One was returned in 1924. The other, which was in the Pergamon Museum, was returned to Turkey in 2011. The second sphinx in the Pergamon Museum with a plaster copy of the first sphinx, and both together again at the Gate back home in Turkey:

Soho House Museum Sphinxes
Soho House Museum in Birmingham is nothing to do with the Soho House members’ clubs. It is a historic Georgian house that was owned by 18th Century industrialist Matthew Boulton. The Museum has been refurbished, and two stone Greek-style sphinx statues that were originally part of the ‘Sphinx Walk’ in the gardens and were later sold off have been returned. “We’re going back to the garden!” “Be careful there boys!”

Louis XVI clock with sphinxes
This decorative mantelpiece clock made from white marble and gilt is an early example of Egyptomania in the France of Louis XVI. However, the sphinxes look like Egyptian/Greek hybrids:

Sphinx cakes
Just like Alice in Wonderland, sphinxes have inspired creators and designers in many different areas of life, including makers of custom cakes. The sphinx cakes are not quite in the same league of the Alice ones, but some are works of art. A plain one and a fancy one:

The Vancouver Island sphinx
Galey Farms is in Saanich on Vancouver Island, a new place of interest because of - alleged - connections with the Sussexes. Galey is filled with a wide range of attractions, including a corn maze and models of a sphinx, a pirate ship, dinosaurs, and a patch of oversized fibreglass mushrooms. The sphinx is a half-scale replica of the Great Sphinx:
