Napoleon’s archaeologist measures the Sphinx
The invasion of Egypt led by Napoleon Bonaparte provided an opportunity for the French to investigate the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx. The Sphinx looks as though it is wondering what is going on up there: "Denon, archeologist attached to Napoleon's Egypt expedition, measures the Sphinx, which is in much better condition than it is today. Date: circa 1799"

The six sphinxes of Crystal Palace
There were originally 12 Victorian sphinxes in Crystal Palace Park, but half of them did not survive the fire of 1936. Originally painted red to simulate the red granite of the ancient sphinx they were copies of, they deteriorated over the years and became cracked and worn down to their base grey colour. In 2016, they were restored and are now back to their original colour. Old grey and new red:

Crystal Palace sphinxes again
I preferred them when they were grey, but admit that they needed to be restored. Cracked backs and mossy bottoms: Getting a beauty treatment: They were still grey the last time I went to Crystal Palace. I must go and see them in the red some time.

The sphinxes of Chiswick House
There are many sphinxes at Chiswick House. While some are made of stone and some of lead, they are all Greek-style sphinxes. Here are two examples: They even have sphinx rides in the children’s playground:

Sphinx on SF cover art
Sphinxes have inspired much artwork, including some for the classic science fiction magazines that flourished in the 1950s. I am not sure which, if any, story this picture applies to. It looks as though the whole area is flooded: Robert Bloch wrote Psycho. He was also a friend of HP Lovecraft. The picture is not so crazy - people do speculate if the area had been flooded in such a manner in the past. As to whether I believe this, is more of a case of having seen no evidence to correspond to such a theory - at this time.

As an aside, that fourth pyramid might well have an answer to it. This 5:13 video shows that it is indeed possible, if you start to look a little further away:
Such an alignment would make sense, too - it would mirror the location of Sirius in the sky. Which makes more sense, than the pyramid being much closer to the Giza trio.

Some people believe that the three pyramids are or were aligned with the three stars in Orion's Belt.

Avacyn I now understand better why some people believe that the Great Sphinx might once have had a companion. From the Greek sphinxes mentioned above through the Embankment sphinxes to the poor quality plaster specimens I saw outside a house in north London recently, they come in pairs.

Akhenaten depicted as a sphinx
This too was one of a pair. They flanked a temple doorway: “Although Akhenaten’s religious reforms purged Egyptian art of many of its most familiar manifestations, the king remained fond of the sphinx and often had himself depicted as that fantastic creature - part man, part lion. In Old Kingdom times, the Great Sphinx at Giza probably stood for the king presenting offerings to the sun god, while in the Eighteenth Dynasty the mighty monument was reinterpreted as the sun god Horemakhet, or Horus in the Horizon. Its impeccable solar credentials therefore made the sphinx an appropriate image for Akhenaten at el-Amarna, the city he called Akhetaten, ‘Horizon of the Sun Disk.’” www.mfa.org/collections/object/relief-of-akhenaten-as-a-sphinx-46197

Benjamin Disraeli’s trip to Egypt
I said above that people could get away with a lot in the days before photography was invented. The same applies to descriptions of and theories about the Great Sphinx and other Ancient Egyptian artefacts: people could make mistakes and mislead others, deliberately or in good faith, as there was no mass tourism and a lot less knowledge of the past about than there is today. On the other hand, you mentioned a detailed and accurate aerial survey from the 1730s Avacyn and there are other early accounts that are still worth reading. Benjamin Disraeli was often depicted in cartoons as a sphinx. He visited Egypt in the 1830s and described his experiences in a few chapters in his work Sketches. He says this about the ages of the Great Sphinx and the Pyramids: “These great creations, therefore, demonstrate the mature civilisation of Egypt far beyond three thousand years back. Rameses and his illustrious predecessors, the Thothmes and the Amunophs, are described as monarchs of the eighteenth dynasty. Thothmes the Fourth, one of these ancestors, cut the great Sphinx of the Pyramids; as for the Pyramids themselves, it is now undeniable that they were not raised at the comparatively late period ascribed to them by Herodotus and Diodorus.“ He also mentions different types of sphinx: “From Luxor you proceed to Karnak, the other great division on this side of the river, through an avenue of sphinxes considerably above a mile in extent; and here I should observe that Egyptian sphinxes are either andro or crio sphinxes, the one formed by the union of the lion with the man, and the other of the lion with the ram. Their mystery is at length penetrated. They are male and never female. They are male and they are monarchs. This great avenue, extending from Luxor to Karnak, was raised by the two immediate successors of the great Rameses, and represents their long line of ancestry.” This book is still in print in various editions and is available to be read online at no cost on Project Gutenberg.

The Great Sphinx’s beard
A stylised, braided, false beard was a pharaoh’s status symbol, a sign of a living god. The Great Sphinx used to have a beard. Fragments were discovered in 1816 and taken to the British Museum. “...the ...monument originally had a stone pharaonic beard, which buttressed its somewhat unstable head. Back in antiquity, the beard fell off, and was later carted away to the British Museum, where it now rests. On a recent visit to the British Museum, I asked the guard in the Egyptian section whether I could see the beard. ‘It's in the basement,' he replied, ‘it has never been displayed. We don't have the room.’ The beard should be returned to Egypt...” www.nytimes.com/1988/03/23/opinion/l-it-s-time-to-give-back-the-sphinx-s-beard-322288.htmlThat was 1988; the beard has since been put on display:

Sphinxes in The Ten Commandments
Cecil B. DeMille’s 1923 blockbuster film The Ten Commandments featured some huge plaster sphinxes. Their faces were painted red because this made them look good when photographed in black and white:

Ten Commandments sphinxes are being unearthed
The plaster sphinxes from the 1923 film The Ten Commandments that were hidden for more than 90 years beneath the rolling sand dunes of Guadalupe California have been rediscovered. Although the dry sand has helped to preserve the plaster and the original terracotta colouring, some restoration will be necessary before the finds are put on display. Here is one of the red heads: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5138349/Perfectly-intact-sphinxs-head-movie-prop-unearthed.html

‘Chinese sphinx’ is found
Sphinxes have always been objects of great interest. Even the restoration of Victorian sphinxes is newsworthy, and new discoveries attract a lot of attention. In 2015, archaeologists found a tiny ‘sphinx’ in the tomb of an ancient Chinese scholar: “Excavators in Ningxia, northwest China, have unearthed what they believe to be a Chinese sphinx in a tomb that dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD). The burial chamber is located along the ancient Silk Road, thought to be established during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD). It's a network of routes that run through a large portion of Asia, connecting western and eastern cultures for trading… The well-preserved marble sphinx which is delicately carved is 14 inches tall with a base that's eight inches long and five inches wide.” www.dailymail.co.uk/news/peoplesdaily/article-3362518/Clash-civilisations-Archaeologists-unearth-1-000-year-old-sphinx-statue-tomb-ancient-Chinese-scholar.html

Chinese Great Sphinx replica was destroyed
Mean-spirited Egyptians requested the destruction of a life-sized replica of their Great Sphinx: “A replica of the Great Sphinx of Giza has been demolished after protests from the Egyptian government who claimed that the copy harmed the cultural heritage of Egypt. The model belongs to Hebei Great Wall Film Studios and is located in Shijiazhuang, north China's Hebei province, the People's Daily Online reports... According to reports, Egyptian authorities were also of the opinion that the copycat differed greatly to its original and may give people a false interpretation of Egyptian antiquities. There were also concerns that it could affect the tourism, film and shooting industries in Egypt. The designers have even copied the original's broken nose, which was mysteriously damaged hundreds of years ago. But unlike the original - which was carved from limestone - the Chinese version appears to have been built using reinforced concrete.“ The replica before the demolition, and the head after removal:

Another Chinese replica of a sphinx
There are a few other sphinx replicas in China including one in Chuzhou City, Anhui province. It looks as though they have tried to recreate the Great Sphinx as it was before it got damaged:

Egyptian sphinx fragments found in northern Israel
From a DM article from 2013: “Archeologists have been left scratching their heads after the unearthing of part of an ancient Egyptian sphinx in northern Israel. The find has prompted Egyptologists to speculate as to how the stone-carved mythical creature travelled so many miles from its original resting place. Some speculate that it may have been looted from the Egyptians thousands of years ago, while others suggest it was likely to have been given by Egypt as a gift to its neighbours. The writing reveals that the sphinx was dedicated to Egyptian ruler Mycerinus, who ruled circa 2500 BC and was builder of the smaller of Giza's three great pyramids. It is the first statue ever to have been found that was created for the leader, and the first time an Egyptian statue has ever been found in the ancient Levant region - today's Israel, Lebanon and Syria. The writing also says: 'Beloved by the divine souls of Heliopolis.' Read more: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2359396/Archaeologists-baffled-ancient-Egyptian-sphinx-discovered-northern-Israel.html#ixzz5GcqKQwgO Commenters say that the sphinx might have been a wedding present, for example King Solomon married an Egyptian princess and King David married out. The archaeologists are hoping to uncover more of this sphinx:

A sphinx with four heads
This is a very unusual example of a Greek-style sphinx. It is said to be Roman, from the second century A.D.

I had no idea that there would be so much to post about. Maybe it really is the Aquarius/Leo influence. I'm going to move this thread to Cross Connections board, as I feel it fits better there. I'll craft a new Historical/Archeological thread in a hidden section of the forum, then put it in the public domain, once I feel I have posted enough times in it to have it keep its focus on historical aspects. I'm not having a go at anyone, I should have had a stronger hand at keeping it on topic. As it is, my failing has generated a really interesting thread, and I don't want to split it in two, or anything, because that would wreck it. Hence me moving it. Have we got an Aquarius/Leo thread, and if not... should we start one?
