More bees in street art
Bees have inspired many official and unofficial public artworks, including statues, murals and graffiti. I put one example in the London thread, but they mostly belong here. This is a good one:

More bees and celebrities
This looks like an avenue that is worth exploring. For starters: We have Peaches Honeyblossom Geldof. Avacyn started a thread about Taylor Momsen a while back. In it he says that she played the part of Honey Bee Swan in a film called The Prophet’s Game.
She also played an aspiring Queen Bee character in the TV series Gossip Girl. She even wore a yellow dress, as do some royals in the Sussex thread:

Bee riddles transformer has posted some riddles on the Sussex thread. Bees are sometimes the subject of riddles. aletheia mentioned Samson in the Bible: “Out of the eater, something to eat; out of the strong, something sweet” (Judges 14:14). Here is one that looks to be from the 17th century. The picture gives the answer away!

Interesting floor there!

Bees and the Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama is fond of bees and honey: “When I consider the lack of cooperation in human society, I can only conclude that it stems from ignorance of our interdependent nature. I am often moved by the example of small insects, such as bees. The laws of nature dictate that bees work together in order to survive. As a result, they possess an instinctive sense of social responsibility. They have no constitution, laws, police, religion or moral training, but because of their nature they labour faithfully together. Occasionally they may fight, but in general the whole colony survives on the basis of cooperation. Human beings, on the other hand, have constitutions, vast legal systems and police forces; we have religion, remarkable intelligence and a heart with great capacity to love. But despite our many extraordinary qualities, in actual practice we lag behind those small insects; in some ways, I feel we are poorer than the bees.” www.dalailama.com/messages/world-peace/the-medicine-of-altruism“His Holiness immediately introduced his theme: the importance of love and compassion at every level of human existence. Comparing human beings to bees, for which he admitted a particular curiosity on account of his predilection for honey, he concluded how much poorer were the humans, in their lack of social responsibility and in their attitude towards their fellow human beings.” www.shambhala.com/snowlion_articles/h-h-the-dalai-lama-dzogchen-teachings-padmasambhava-empowermentfor-world-peace/“The Dalai Lama continues to proclaim his reincarnation is a ‘purely religious matter’ and something only he can decide, but he has no way to compel admiration from the faithful. 'He's been proclaiming he'll reincarnate as a foreigner, as a bee, as a ‘mischievous blond girl’, or even proposing a living reincarnation or an end to reincarnation.” www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3512583/High-ranking-Chinese-official-says-Dalai-Lama-making-fool-Buddhism-suggested-reincarnated-bee-mischievous-blond-girl.html

Eric the Monty Python bee Eric the Half-a-Bee is a song by the Monty Python team, who were brought to our attention by Samantha Markle. They have inspired some good posts and have connections to many topics. I wonder why there are characters from Alice in Wonderland on the record:

Mark Gatiss has been mentioned quite a lot recently. He wrote a few episodes of the tv series "Agatha Christie's Poirot". I have noticed his name in the credits when I watched them recently. In one of those (Hallowe'en party) a girl is drowned while wearing a bee costume. I haven't read the original book by Agatha Christie but I assume that she did not describe the victim as wearing a bee costume. It is unclear though who decided on the bee costume it could have been the screen writer Gatiss or the director.
Below is a short clip from the episode:

truthseeker it was you who first got me to pay attention to Mark Gatiss. He is very creative and a man of many talents. He has written books about someone called Lucifer Box. It does seem that he was responsible for the bee costume as he wrote the screenplay. Strange, because people usually wear witch and monster costumes to Halloween parties.

Bees in Jupiter Ascending
“In the film Jupiter Ascending, you have the protaganist finding out she is the queen of Earth. ” Avacyn the film was shown on Freeview for the first time yesterday. I think it is best seen in a cinema for the special effects. Sean Bean as Stinger, a human who is part bee, was good, and I did like the Bee Queen scene. They are genetically designed to recognise royalty:

Red Dwarf honey bee
I came across some unusual bees while looking for references to the Red Dwarf TV programme. They are a wild species that is found in southern Asia. At first sight they looked to me like mint humbugs in sweet wrappers!

The fear bees cause in people is ridiculous. Fair enough, some people are allergic and being stung could kill them, so their fear is understandable, but they're a small minority. There's nothing funnier than a pub garden full of idiotic people flapping and screaming because a honeybee is harmlessly flying around! Bees are amazing and beautiful animals and we owe them everything, and they're so like humans. My job can involve destroying their habitats which I feel terrible about, but to make up for it, I leave my back garden overgrown and have loads of bee-friendly plants for them. It's mostly honeybees but there are some bumblebees flying about too. Honeybees are so docile, I'm always getting them walking across my bare arms and they don't hurt you. You have to really irritate a honeybee to get stung. Lockdown (when it was actually respected) was a great help for bees. Less cars on the roads and less pollutants in the air. The natural world can recover so quickly when we allow it to, but we have to give it a helping hand and realise we can't keep pillaging the planet for endless economic growth and technological advancement. Here's a cool children's song in Old English dedicated to bees. Long live the bee!

I love that medieval tapestry style.
Good you're not afraid of bees, there's no reason to be unless you're allergic. I've been stung, and it does hurt, but it's hardly unbearable agony. Plus, they don't want to sting you: they die if they do. Honeybees will almost always only sting in defence of the hive. Bumblebees are a bit more aggressive, but still will only stung if severely annoyed.
Forget dogs, bees are man's best friend. Advocating for bees should be a non-partisan thing everyone can get behind. Sadly, it's not. We could do with a thread on environmentalism...

Two big bees for Sarah Ferguson
As mentioned above, bees are part of the Ferguson family crest, and Sarah Ferguson had bees embroidered on her wedding dress. She had two big embroidered ones on her lapels when reading one of her stories recently:

Sylvia Plath and beekeeping
The poet Sylva Plath kept bees when she was living in Devon in 1962. This inspired her to produce some poems about bees: “Bemoaning the high cost involved with setting up a hive – $50 at the time – she received a second hand hive from a veteran beekeeper and ordered a swarm of Italian hybrid bees. Plath wrote a letter to her mother that June, expressing her excitement at becoming a beekeeper. It was this experience that inspired a collection of five poems, collectively known as the “bee poems” and individually titled "The Bee Meeting," "The Arrival of the Bee Box," "Stings," "The Swarm," and "Wintering." honeybeepoemproject.weebly.com/sylvia-plath.htmlThe bee poems can be found here: strongverse.blogspot.com/2013/01/sylvia-plaths-bee-poems.htmlThe poem Wintering inspired this novel:

Ted Hughes, Otto Plath and The Bee God
The poet Ted Hughes wrote a poem called The Bee God. It contains references to his wife Sylvia Plath’s beekeeping, which could have been an attempt to get closer to her father Otto Plath, who died when she was eight years old: “ When you wanted bees I never dreamed It meant your Daddy had come up out of the well.” Otto Plath had bee connections: “Sylvia’s father, Otto Plath, had been an authority on bumble bees. His book, Bumblebees and Their Ways (1934) is still highly regarded today. As a boy in Germany, he had been nicknamed Beinen-Konig (king of the bees) and when he emigrated to the United States, he became a professor of entomology at Boston University. His death when Sylvia was only eight years old deeply affected her feelings and thoughts for the rest of her life. Her mother writes that, when she was told of her father’s death, she said: “I’ll never speak to God again!”” dublinbees.org/members-area/sylvia-plath-and-the-bees/

Loads of them out this weekend. One of nature's finest sights. Nothing mankind has ever invented or will ever invent will come close to being as marvellous as these animals.

Black bands for the royal beehives
Telling the news to the bees is a very old tradition. Beekeepers go to their hives and inform the bees of major developments in the household. The Buckingham Palace bees have been told the news about the Queen: “The official Palace beekeeper, John Chapple, 79, told MailOnline how he travelled to Buckingham Palace and Clarence House on Friday following news of The Queen’s death to carry out the superstitious ritual. He placed black ribbons tied into bows on the hives, home to tens of thousands of bees, before informing them that their mistress had died and that a new master would be in charge from now on. He then urged the bees to be good to their new master - himself once famed for talking to plants.” www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11199259/Royal-beekeeper-informed-Queens-bees-HM-died-King-Charles-new-boss.html

Two books about telling the bees
Many beekeepers believe that it is very important to tell the bees when someone in the household dies or there are other big changes in the family: if this is not done there will be bad luck or even disaster. One fiction and one non-fiction book feature this old, possibly Celtic, custom on their covers:
