Princess Bee by Lea Bradovich
Beehive hairstyles were featured on the Sussexes thread. Lavendel found some beautiful pictures by artist Lea Bradovich, who features the natural world in her artwork. This portrait is called Princess Bee:

One interesting reference to bees and honey occurs in the Old Testament, the Book of Judges. This is the story of Samson returning to the carcase of the lion he had slain to find a swarm of bees and honey therein. Later on, Samson uses this incident to concoct his riddle to the Philistines ("out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness") which I remember now was referenced in Stephen King's book Wizard and Glass (1997) from the Dark Tower series. Specifically the part where Roland plays a game of riddles with the demented monorail Blaine. Biblical references to bees are always negative whereas references to honey are generally positive. Biblically, bees are associated with the enemies of God. For example the association of bees with the Amorites in Deuteronomy. In the Palestine of antiquity, honey was even said to be found within rocks and stones, which makes for an interesting image. Lion slain by Samson with bees emerging from carcase.

Out of the strong came forth sweetness aletheia it is great to see you again. It is very quiet on here at the moment - this often happens in the summer- but I have been keeping things going. Bees in the Bible are negative? That is strange. I don’t think that bees would do that in real life - there must be some symbolism here. There is a reference to your story on golden syrup tins:

Thanks UnseenI, it is great to be back! It will take me a while to catch up on all the posts but I'll endeavour to. Well done on all the research you've been doing while it was so quiet It makes sense that Abram Lyle would use this biblical imagery owing to his strict religious faith. He was a Presbyterian elder in Greenock and once remarked that he would rather see his son return home dead than drunk (or words to that effect)!

Yes, a quiet time is good for catching up.
Tate & Lyle and their syrup tins and sugar packets are familiar from many people's earliest childhoods.
The Tate Gallery was built with the help of a huge donation from Mr Tate. Both Tate galleries have beehives on their roofs now.

Neil Gaiman, beekeeper
Author Neil Gaiman was mentioned many times on the old forum. He is the co-author of Good Omens, from which a quotation about bees appears in the Sussex thread on this forum. Just like Sherlock Holmes in his retirement, Neil Gaiman keeps bees: Interestingly, his good friend Tori Amos released an album called The Beekeeper.

Really? Maybe he inspired it. Bees appear in many of Terry Pratchett’s books, so both Good Omens authors share an interest. Here is his final novel:

It's possible. I'll have to see if there was a specific song with such a title, and look up the lyrics and video. She puts a lot of symbolism in her music.

Neil Gaiman: The Case of Death and Honey The Case of Death and Honey is a short story in the Sherlock Holmes tradition by Neil Gaiman. I didn’t know that Gaiman had produced a few Sherlock stories. They get very good reviews so are worth investigating. Sherlock Holmes is old in this one, and the bees are Chinese.

Bee-Man, obscure Superhero
Not very well known, Bee-Man had a very short career in the 1960s. He had a very small cult following, but he is not very original. He gained special qualities after being imprisoned and stung by giant sentient Martian bees!

The iconic heavyweight boxing legend Muhammad Ali (formerly Cassius Clay) was known by the motto "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" which described how his fighting style was envisioned. He was born in Louisville, KY on 17 January 1942 and died very recently, 3 June 2016. As well as boxing he was very active in the political currents of the time and was mentored by Malcolm X through his affiliation with the Nation of Islam in the 1960s. The name Cassius Clay or C.C. can correspond to 33 and his adopted forename has double M within. The photograph below evokes interesting links between bees and butterflies and the symbolic significance thereof. Note also the Pepsi Co logo at the bottom in the customary red & blue.

Thousands of bees at Muhammad Ali’s memorial
From 2016: “The Muhammad Ali Centre in Louisville, a museum close to Ali’s childhood home, has seen a number of visitors passing by in recent to pay their respects in recent days – including, fittingly, 15,000 bees, which have made their home next to a “Float Like a Butterfly, Sting Like a Bee” mural. "The irony is not lost on me at all," said beekeeper Kevin McKinney, who was called in to remove the insects. The mural is a quotation from Ali: prior to fighting George Foreman in the 1974 Rumble in the Jungle, he told reporters: “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, his hands can't hit what his eyes can't see.” www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06/06/thousands-of-bees-swarm-to-muhammad-ali-sting-like-a-bee-memoria/

Bee-Man’s manifesto
Or should it bee beeifesto! I think this is really funny: "My worthy deeds will force all Earthlings to surrender to my SUPERIOR WORLD. Many of your great scientists have predicted that ONE DAY INSECTS WILL RULE THE EARTH. You laughed and called them crazy, but I shall prove them RIGHT. The day is not far away when INSECTS WILL INDEED RULE THE HUMANS OF THE EARTH. You will become our slaves and solve many of our problems - one of which is labor. The entire human race, what is left of it, that is, will become SLAVES TO MY RACE. You will fulfill the duties of our 'worker bees.' You will become MY SLAVES. Any questions?" I have a question: will earthling slaves have to wear bee costumes just like yours? gone-and-forgotten.blogspot.com/2014/04/truly-gone-forgotten-bee-man.html

Took a closer look at the Tori Amos album. Very interesting, indeed...
I'll have to make time to look deeper, I guess. I think I have her album still: I was a big Tori fan when I was a teenager.

"I had never before heard of Bee Man... Quite interesting!"
I have never read comic books or much liked the associated films, but I see that some of the artwork is not bad, the dialogue can be funny and there may be some interesting connections to be found.
It seems that the creators were always looking for a new angle. Bee-Man sounds like a Spiderman spin-off.

And yes, there are connections. Look at how Spiderman creates his webs. What's the hand gesture?
As for artwork... Kingdom Come springs to mind:

Muhammad Ali and another bee coincidence
Muhammad Ali’s original name was Cassius Marcellus Clay (Junior).
Cassius means narcissistic and vain!
Marcellus means hammer and is derived from Mars.
By coincidence, in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar Cassius has this to say: Antony, The posture of your blows are yet unknown. But for your words, they rob the Hybla bees And leave them honeyless.

Bees and Mars connection
Robot bees are going to Mars: “A swarm of robotic bees, nimble enough to fly across the surface of Mars and explore the Red Planet’s nooks and crannies, is being funded by Nasa. The cyber-insects, dubbed Marsbees, are the size of bumblebees but have giant wings to generate sufficient lift to hover in the Martian atmosphere, which is around 100 times thinner than Earth’s. Developed by US and Japanese scientists, the bees would be fitted with sensors and wireless communication devices so they could map terrain, take samples, or even look for signs of life, such as methane emissions. Although rovers are already exploring Mars, they move incredibly slowly…” www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2018/04/01/bees-mars-nasa-funds-swarm-robotic-insects-exploring-red-planet/

In the forth series of Doctor Who, there were constant references to the bees disappearing. In the next to final episode, it transpires that in amongst the regular bees were some alient insects, that looked like bees. Them disappearing was a sign of something bad impending to Earth.
In the film Jupiter Ascending, you have the protaganist finding out she is the queen of Earth. When she is taken to be helped, those helping her were spliced with animal DNA. And then the bees in the area start swarming around the protagonist, but not to attack. They were signalling their obedience to her. Also, the couple had been spliced with bee DNA. The actors were Sean Bean, and Charlotte Beaumont. She caught my attention, because she had been in Waterloo Road.
If this helps at all?

Now you've found my secret, you can buzz off!
Seriously, though. I remember that storyline. It's quite tragic, because she was tainted by an impending horror. When she was killed, it unleashed a tidal wave of destruction. Other recurring characters had their fates sealed as well.
Good find, though.

Manchester’s Bees in the City trail
The association of bees with Manchester has been mentioned earlier. Now they appear in a new public art trail in the city. This one is called Bee Live:

Dior and the bees
Fashion house Christian Dior has often used the bee symbol. Here it is on their shopping bags - in the significant red, black and white colour combination:
