Bram Stoker had red hair and blue eyes
Bram, or Abraham, Stoker, creator of Count Dracula, was an Irishman. He is described as having thick red hair, a red beard and bright blue eyes. I always envisaged him as being dark and sinister!

Mark Twain had red hair and blue/grey eyes
He also praised red hair very highly and made a few interesting comments about it: "When red headed people are above a certain social grade their hair is auburn." "While the rest of the species is descended from apes, redheads are descended from cats." "I would have loved to live in the time of Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth, the best dressed period of the world. You know I like color and flummery and all such things - I was born red-headed - maybe that accounts for my passion for the gorgeous and ornamental."

Catherine of Aragon was a redhead
Catherine of Aragon is said to have had reddish hair and blue eyes - the rarest combination. Where could this have come from? Her parents were Ferdinand and Isabella, monarchs of Spain.

The mistress of Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson had red hair, her name was Emma, Lady Hamilton. She came from very humble beginnings and in her early years was a naked dancing girl and lived in a brothel. She met the Honourable Charles Greville and became his mistress after he fell in love with her, from here she was introduced into high society. She modelled for famous paintings by George Romney and was eventually married to Sir William Hamilton (uncle of Greville). Hamilton liked to show off his prize and Emma would give dancing performances to guests he hosted – one of these performances was seen by Goethe! Further down the line she met Lord Nelson who fell madly in love with her. They eventually had a child together named Horatia. After the death of Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, Emma was not allowed to attend the funeral and spent her last years distraught, dying in 1815. I wonder if it was her hair that marked her out as special, as every man who met her seemed to fall in love instantly!

Red hair and vitamin D
A theory about the origin of red hair: “Irish people developed their red hair because of a lack of sunlight, according to new research from a leading DNA lab. DNA has revealed that one in 10 Irish people have red hair but it is thought that up to half the population on the island could be carrying the redhead gene even though they are blonde or brunette. The DNA laboratory carrying out research into the flame-haired gene believes it is so associated with Ireland and Scotland because it is connected to a lack of vitamin D, which is related to the lack of sunlight. It is thought Ireland, Scotland and northern England have the highest concentration of Titian-haired people in the world because the Celtic colouring is genetically programmed to work better in our sun-starved countries.” www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/republic-of-ireland/irish-people-have-red-hair-due-to-lack-of-vitamin-d-29227626.html

Red hair in Good Omens Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman is being filmed. Michael Sheen plays the angel Aziraphale and David Tennant the demon Crowley. As might be expected, Michael Sheen’s hair is dyed an angelic blond and he wears light-coloured clothes; David Tennant wears dark clothes but his hair is bright red. This seems very strange: surely it should be jet black. We will have to wait until 2019 to see the film.

Red hair and blue eyes in the world of Oz
In the Wizard of Oz film, the good witch Glinda was played by actress Billie Burke. This is interesting: “In the books, Glinda is depicted as a young woman with long, rich red hair and blue eyes.“ wikivividly.com/wiki/Billie_BurkeBillie Burke had red hair and blue eyes! It may seem that they were lucky to find someone who could match the book’s description, considering that most occurrences of this very rare colouring are in Scotland and Ireland, but Billie Burke’s father was of Irish descent and he passed on his red hair and blue eyes to her:

Mark Gatiss again
This is getting very interesting, especially when we bring together information from different threads and posters. It was truthseeker who first reported this: “Mark Gatiss who plays Sherlock's brother Mycroft also has naturally red hair:” And this: “Mark Gatiss mentioned that he is ‘descended from the ancient kings of Ireland’". Avacyn said this a while back: “Another thing of interest is the Milesians. They travelled to Ireland from Spain, though they had originally started off in Egypt. Could this be a connection, or is it a tangent?” Some sources say that the Milesians were dark. However, this is from a list of notable Milesian royalty: “One queen, famous and capable, whom early Ireland boasted was Macha Mong Ruad (the red-haired, who reigned over the land about three hundred years before Christ. ) homepage.eircom.net/~kthomas/history/History3.htmI noticed a resemblance between one of Mark Gatiss’s characters in The League of Gentlemen and Prince Harry. Lavendel noticed a blue/orange shirt in this picture, similar to the one that red-haired, blue-eyed Martin McGuinness is wearing above:

Two red-headed rulers of Bavaria
Otto I (1117 – 11 July 1183), called the Redhead (German: der Rotkopf), was Duke of Bavaria from 1180 until his death. He was also called Otto VI as Count Palatine of Bavaria from 1156 to 1180. Disney’s Peter Pan
The book does not mention Peter Pan’s hair colour, but for some reason he was given red hair in Disney’s 1953 film:

Disney’s Ariel: red hair and blue eyes
Ariel in Disney’s 1989 film The Little Mermaid has red hair and blue eyes. Perhaps in the case of Ariel - and Peter Pan - Disney’s intention is to make red hair the designation of a non-human entity.

Princess Merida: red hair and blue eyes
Princess Merida appears in the 2012 Disney film Brave, which is set in mystical Scotland. The red hair/blue eyes combination is most common in Celtic nations, so maybe this is why she was given this colouring.

A good article about red hair
There are some spectacular pictures of people with red hair on the BBC Scotland website in an article promoting the book Gingers by Kieran Dodds: “Over the past seven years, Scottish photographer Kieran Dodds has been taking pictures of people from around the world with ginger hair. Kieran himself is "pale and ginger", what he calls a cliché of Scottish national identity, but he wants to use the hair colour to illustrate a global phenomenon.” www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-54929694

Red hair and Taboo connections
Earlier posts show the red hair and blue eyes of Mark Gatiss and Prince Harry, the second Duke of Sussex. There are some posts about the TV series Taboo (2017) in the Sussexes thread. Mark Gatiss plays the part of the Prince Regent, oldest brother of Augustus the first Duke of Sussex, who appears to have reddish hair and blue eyes: There is also a red-headed character in Taboo , an actress called Lorna Bow. She is played by Irish actress Jessie Buckley, who is a natural red-head.

Another taboo and red hair connection
There is a song by comedian/actor/songwriter Tim Minchin called Prejudice about the taboo word g i n g e r: “ ...In our modern free-spoken society There is a word that we still hold taboo ...When you are a ginger life is pretty hard, The years of ritual bullying in the school yard...”
