This is a topic of interest in its own right. It applies across a variety of Boards and Threads. Red hair in the royal family, red hair and Sherlock Holmes, the red-headed Weasley family in Harry Potter... these are just some of the connections to be made. Red is the rarest natural hair colour; it is found more often in Britain than in other parts of the world. "In The Tribes of Britain, archaeologist David Miles says around 80 percent of the genetic characteristics of most white Britons have been passed down from a few thousand Ice Age hunters... 'The most visible British genetic marker is red hair,' he added. The writer Tacitus noted the Romans' surprise at how common it was when they arrived 2,000 years ago. 'It's something that foreign observers have often commented on,' Miles said. 'Recent studies have shown that there is more red hair in Scotland and Wales than anywhere else in the world. It's a mutation that probably occurred between 8,000 and 10,000 years ago.' " news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/07/0719_050719_britishgene.html

Edinburgh is the world capital for red hair
From an article in The Telegraph: “The Edinburgh area is the most red headed region, according to the study, with 40 per cent of the population carrying one of the three common red hair gene variants... the lower percentages for the gene variants in the south of England and the far north of Scotland suggested that Anglo Saxons diluted the red headed gene in England, and Norse Vikings diluted it in the north and west of Scotland.” www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/10264427/Edinburgh-is-surprise-capital-of-redheaded-Britain-and-Ireland.htmlThey even had a Ginger Pride march: “People with red hair have shown their true colours in a march through Edinburgh. It had been billed as the UK's first Ginger Pride Walk and was part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.” www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-23643831

Red hair and blue blood
Red hair is quite common in many of the British royal dynasties. Richard the Lionheart and Henry II are reported to have had red hair. Plantagenets Elizabeth Woodville and her daughter Elizabeth of York have red hair in paintings. Queen Elizabeth I had red hair; this resemblance to her Tudor father Henry VIII did her no harm. Prince Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Pretender, is said to have had red hair. Sarah Ferguson brought very red hair into the royal family. The Spencers often have red hair too – the fifth earl was known as the ‘Red Earl’ - which could be where Prince Harry gets it from. Britain's wartime leader Winston Spencer Churchill was another great British redhead, and he was apparently nicknamed ‘Copperknob’ at school because of it. Here is Princess Diana’s sister Lady Sarah Spencer: What can we learn from this? Red hair = red heir = the next monarch will be Lancastrian not Yorkist?

Red hair, Sherlock Holmes and Benedict Cumberbatch
There is a web of connections involving the above elements. Benedict Cumberbatch, the star of the TV series Sherlock, has (one of the many shades of) red hair. His natural hair colour is auburn, but he dyes it because he thinks it unsuitable for many of his characters – except for Van Gogh! Red hair would certainly look all wrong on Sherlock Holmes, in my opinion. The real Benedict Cumberbatch: And of course we have the Sherlock Holmes story The Red-Headed League.

In terms of Royalty, it reminds me of Egyptian royal mummies being found to have red hair. I've seen claims that it is the result of the mummification process dying the hair red. I have not yet had time to see the truth in the matter. It was also regarded that red hair was the mark of the Egyptian god Set. I think it is because he was the ruler of the desert, (the red land,) and red would be associated with him that way... Another thing of interest is the Milesians. They travelled to Ireland from Spain, though they had originally started off in Egypt. Could this be a connection, or is it a tangent?

If this is the case, then it suggests that the original mutation occurred in the Edinburgh region. Much like the Basque, and Rhesus Negative blood.

Prince Harry: red hair with blue eyes
“The title of rarest hair color/eye color combination belongs to red haired folks with blue eyes. According to Medical Daily, both the blue eye trait and the red hair trait are recessive, so their likelihood of simultaneous appearance is pretty slim. Red hair alone occurs with a frequency of one to two percent of the human population, while blue eyes occur in approximately 17 percent of the human population. Without taking into account varied genetic likelihoods based on race, the grand total of people in the world with this combo is roughly 12.75 million out of a world population of 7.5 billion people.” www.rd.com/health/beauty/hair-eye-color-combination-rare/Prince Harry has red hair and blue eyes, so his colouring is very rare: Benedict Cumberbatch looks to have blue eyes in the picture in the post above...

Red hair in Ancient Egyptian and other long-dead people
Yes, traces of red hair are often found in graves and coffins etc. but this does not necessarily mean that the hair was red when the people were alive. The colour can change for a variety of reasons.

Red hair and the Norsemen: two conflicting theories
From an earlier post: “...the lower percentages for the gene variants in the south of England and the far north of Scotland suggested that Anglo Saxons diluted the red headed gene in England, and Norse Vikings diluted it in the north and west of Scotland.” So the Norse Vikings were not red-headed then. But what about this, a short extract from an interesting article that promotes the theory that the gene for red hair came from southwest Norway: “The perception that the Norse were blond is nothing more than a prevalent myth. Genetically speaking, the chances of them having blond hair weren’t that likely. The chances are that they would have had red hair. Interestingly, if you look at where red hair occurs in the world you can almost map it to Viking trading routes.” Detailed map of trade routes and territorial possessions of the Norsemen during the Viking Age with frequency and distribution of the red hair gene in Europe: thedockyards.com/red-hair/The gene could have from the Celts; it could have come from the Norsemen; it could have come from Celto-Germanic sources. Appropriation and wishful thinking undoubtedly play a part when such theories are proposed. People want their own ideas to be accepted at the expense of other people’s theories. I favour the Celtic origin myself. Maybe the Norsemen got the gene from the Celts.

Erik the Red
I am not knowledgeable enough to decide whether the Norsemen did or did not have red hair. I remembered someone who supports the theory that they did. From WiKi: “Erik Thorvaldsson (known as Erik the Red was a Norwegian Viking, remembered in medieval and Icelandic saga sources as having founded the first Norse settlement in Greenland...The appellation "the Red" most likely refers to his hair color and the color of his beard.” There are many depictions of this great explorer - and his ship - and the portraits all show him with red hair:

Prince Harry’s red hair again
The allegation that red-haired James Hewitt is Prince Harry’s real father is often countered with pictures of red hair in the Spencer family and the assertion that Hewitt didn’t meet Princess Diana until two years after Harry was born. Hewitt himself denies the allegation.
I can see an increasing likeness to Prince Charles around Prince Harry’s eye and top of nose area, which suggests that Harry is Charles’s son.
However, there is this:
“Being a recessive genetic trait means that both parents must carry the gene in order for their children to be born red haired.”
So Prince Charles must be carrying the red hair gene. Where would he have got this from, and why didn’t it come out in any of his relatives?

Red hair, presidents and revolutionaries
There are some people of great interest and importance who are reported to have had red hair. This includes three leaders of revolutions and rebellions, British, French and American. Oliver Cromwell His hair when his body was exhumed after the Restoration was said to be red. As with the Egyptian mummies, this could have another cause. Maybe his hair had a reddish tinge when he was alive. Maximilien Robespierre His hair was said to be light chestnut coloured, but like men of the time he wore a wig or powdered his hair white. His eyes were said to be pale or blue too. George Washington Another man who hid his natural hair colour, which is reported as being red. In addition to the three great men above: Thomas Jefferson, the third US president, had hair that was inclined to red, and blue eyes. Andrew Jackson, the seventh US president, had penetrating blue eyes and sandy red hair. Martin Van Buren, the eighth US president, had red hair. His nickname was “The Red Fox of Kinderhook”. So there were two US presidents with red hair and blue eyes – the rarest combination of them all. The authors of this and other articles I have found seem eager to claim red hair for as many great men as possible, even when the evidence is absent, conflicting or of dubious origin. Perhaps they think it makes prominent people even more interesting, unusual and special. www.themythsandhistoryofredhair.co.uk/redhairinamerica.html

Red Red Red
Royal team: Sarah Ferguson and daughters Beatrice, left, and Eugenie, right sinless69uk your little comment has got me really confused now. I always assumed that people with red hair got their colouring from one parent, and it was usually obvious which one it was. I thought that the York girls just took after their mother. Assuming that it is really true that there needs to be a carrier of the red hair gene on both sides of the family, then once again, where did Prince Andrew get it from?

Benedict Chocobatch and two red-haired ladies
From April 2015: “It's the ultimate treat for Benedict Cumberbatch fans and stands an imposing 6ft tall - just like the man himself. But shoppers at London's Westfield Stratford City shopping centre looked more than a little surprised to discover a chocolate sculpture of Benedict Cumberbatch in their midst. One lady was spotted cautiously approaching the edible artwork before quickly backing off, while another couldn't quite hide their smile of surprise.” Read more: www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3024828/Giant-chocolate-sculpture-Benedict-Cumberbatch-unveiled-time-Easter-critical-reception-isn-t-quite-makers-hoped-for.html#ixzz4lfT62fpJWhat a strange idea. Westfield Stratford is close to the Olympic Park. Benedict Cumberbatch opened the BBC's London 2012 Olympics Coverage. And what a coincidence that both people in the pictures, like Cumberbatch himself have red hair.

Ginger Aryan supremacist plotted to kill Charles so Harry would be king
You couldn’t make this up. In revenge for being bullied for having ginger hair, a ‘ginger extremist’ planned to kill Prince Charles in the hope that this would make way for red-haired Prince Harry to become king! “Red-haired Mark Colborne has been detained indefinitely under the mental health act over plan to assassinate Prince Charles... Patricia Colborne, 59, from Southampton, and her other son Kevin, 30, raised the alarm after discovering he had amassed ingredients for cyanide, along with deranged diary entries which praised mass murderer Anders Breivik and idolised the IRA as proud redheads...His plot was foiled in June last year when his brother Kevin stumbled on his stash – including notes from The Terrorist Handbook - while doing some DIY... Displaying apparent misunderstanding of the royal succession, he wrote in his diary: ‘Kill Charles and Prince Harry becomes king... Kill the tyrants and become free from tyrannical future rule.’ He plotted a terror attack ‘for the Aryan people’, likening himself to Breivik, who killed 77 people in bomb and gun attacks in Norway in 2011.” www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/12063521/Ginger-extremist-Mark-Colborne-plotted-to-kill-Prince-Charles-sentenced.html

Ginger Aryan extremist’s ideas about red hair and the IRA
Where did Mark Colborne get the idea that red hair is associated with the IRA? Perhaps he got confused because of the high incidence of red hair in Ireland. “The jury was told Colborne, a jobless recluse with no real friends, blamed all his problems on school bullies who taunted him about his ginger hair. One diary entry said: ‘It was a curse to be born Aryan among dark-haired Caucasian fascists.’ Another read: ‘The IRA are my heroes - acting as a small military force taking on a wealthy power, and of course red hair being associated with their history.” www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/12063521/Ginger-extremist-Mark-Colborne-plotted-to-kill-Prince-Charles-sentenced.htmlIrish Republican and Sinn Féin politician Martin McGuinness certainly had red hair – and the rare combination of red hair and blue eyes – but I don’t think many other IRA members did. In this early picture with Gerry Adams, Martin McGuinness – in the blue/orange shirt - looks a bit like Prince Harry: Older here and grey, but we can see his blue eyes:

L. Ron Hubbard had red hair and maybe blue eyes too
A few sources say that Hubbard had green eyes, but fellow SF writer Jack Williamson had this to say about the teller of tall stories: "I recall his eyes, the wary, light-blue eyes that I somehow associate with the gunmen of the old West, watching me sharply as he talked as if to see how much I believed." With relevance to Sol Invictus, the Church of Scientology bought a ship and renamed it Apollo. It became Hubbard’s residence and flagship. L. Ron Hubbard and his red hair:

A strange case from India
“A young woman born to Indian parents with red hair, white skin and freckles has spent her life being shunned and bullied because people think she's diseased. Pooja Ganatra, 24, who was born in Mumbai, has flaming ginger hair, deep emerald eyes and white skin - like that of a stereotypical Gaelic woman. But the proud Indian was actually born to 'typically Indian' parents who thought her freckles were a birth defect - and have no idea where her unusual looks come from. Miss Ganatra's appearance, believed to stem from her ancestors, has made her feel like a foreigner in her own country - with Indians staring and asking for pictures.” www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-5178549/The-Indian-feels-like-foreigner-country.html#ixzz51M52g9VQ Pooja as a child and in a recent picture: There are many more pictures in the DM article, Her mother looks quite pale. I don’t know what to make of this one. Perhaps there is something we are not being told…

Red-haired, blue-eyed seal pup in Russia
“Sitting all alone on a beach, this little seal is an outcast from the colony. Its crime? Having reddish-brown fur and the palest of blue eyes. The rest of its sleek black family took an instant dislike to the ginger pup, leaving it to fend for itself...the poor seal is almost blind and so was unlikely to survive in the wild. The pup – whose colour is the result of an accumulation of iron in its fur – might have had more luck in the U.S. One of the biggest concentrations of red-haired seals is in San Francisco.” Read more: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2037734/The-lonely-seal-wanted-Pup-abandoned-having-rare-brown-fur.html#ixzz52GZsCBv4 Iron causes red pigmentation in fur?

Rupert Grint/Ron Weasley has blue eyes?
I have never noticed Rupert Grint’s eye colour before, but I have just seen that the majority of reports say that he has blue eyes - in which case he is yet another example of the rarest of all colour combinations. The colour changes in different images, sometimes appearing greenish or hazel. He may not have the intense blue of Prince Harry and Ed Sheeran, but he certainly has pale, blue-ish eyes: And he has blue eyes here!

Rupert Grint/Ron Weasley and Ed Sheeran
I don’t know how you found Ed Sheeran Lavendel but he has many relevant connections. Rupert Grint pretended that he was living a double life as Ed Sheeran in a joke video: “Earlier this month, he hilariously revealed that he regularly gets mistaken for musician Ed Sheeran. And Rupert Grint took things one step further with a comical spoof video, where the pressure of moonlighting as the flame-haired singer got too much to handle ahead of a performance.“ Read more: www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-4338030/Rupert-Grint-secretly-moonlighting-Ed-Sheeran.html#ixzz52esO9PEd They may not be twins like Romulus and Remus, but they have similar colouring and there is certainly a superficial likeness. They have also worked together, deliberately accentuating the resemblance. Rupert and Ed in 2011:
