The alternative coronation of 1937
The first coronation of the 20th century was that of Edward VII in 1902; George V came next in 1911. Edward VIII did not have a coronation; after the Abdication his brother George VI was crowned in May 1937, on the date originally planned for Edward. It was the first big event shown on the new TV service and the first real outside broadcast. Some people wanted to do more than watch: they staged their own ceremony. Pupils of the Michael Faraday School in Walworth, London acting the parts of King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and the Archbishop of Canterbury:

Mr Bean and the Queen
Rowan Atkinson has many royal connections, both in real life and in his films and TV programmes. The episode Royal Bean in the animated Mr Bean series sees him visiting Buckingham Palace, where one of the Queen's corgis steals his teddy bear:

New Year's Eve 1999
The royals traditionally celebrate New Year's Eve privately at Sandringham. The 1999/2000 transition was a special occasion. The Queen and Prince Philip agreed to attend a party to open the new Millennium Dome on the Greenwich Peninsula; Princess Anne also came to the event. The royals and Prime Minister Tony Blair sing Auld Lang Syne at midnight: A toast to welcome the new year, the new decade, the new century and the new millennium:

George VI one hundred years ago
It will soon be the 70th anniversary of the death of King George VI. He was still Prince Albert, Duke of York when this picture was taken in 1922:

Seven days to seventy years
It looks as though the Queen is going to make it in spite of all the recent problems and worries. The main events will be held in May and June. I wonder what will have happened by then. She may not be able to attend all of them in person or do much travelling around the realm and Commonwealth this time.

Royal dog perfume: please tell me this isn't true!
Anyone would think that the Queen has been getting merchandising ideas from Sarah Ferguson: "The Queen has launched her own brand of dog perfume which is on sale at her Sandringham estate in Norfolk. Her Majesty, who is an ardent dog lover, has created a special Royal cologne for pampered pooches, which comes with a price-tag of £9.99. She has collaborated with nearby company, Norfolk Natural Living, to make the Happy Hounds Dog Cologne, which has the essence of 'Coastal Walks.'” www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-10522945/Queen-launches-brand-dog-perfume-sale-9-99.htmlI am not a dog owner, but surely this can't be good for dogs!

'Comedy terrorist' gate-crashes William's party
The royals have a strange effect on some people. For example, some people are convinced that they are the illegitimate child of a member of the royal family. Another topic is that of people who bypass all the security and get close to one or more royals. A very weird man called Aaron Barschak did this in 2003: “The comedian who gatecrashed Prince William's 21st birthday party has described the astonishing moment when he kissed the prince on both cheeks. In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, Aaron Barschak, 36, detailed the full shocking extent of the security blunders which allowed him to wander unchallenged into Windsor Castle. He told how he spent more than a minute performing a comedy routine beside William before embracing him and walking off stage. He was arrested only after heading for the bar and demanding champagne. Remarkably Barschak, dressed as Osama Bin Laden, climbed three walls and two gates before wandering around the castle grounds for almost an hour. He said he spoke to only one policeman - who helpfully gave directions to the fancy-dress party in the Waterloo Chamber where three generations of the Royal Family were among the 320 guests... Barschak said: "The security was just non-existent. I was carrying a bag which could have had a bomb in it. I was just yards away from the Queen and Prince Charles. If I had been a real terrorist the entire Royal Family would have been wiped out."” www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-185928/I-gave-Wills-kiss.htmlHe wore a pink dress and a turban as his party outfit. Outside Windsor Castle, and an indoor view:

More merching by the monarch
First there was the 'coastal walks' dog perfume, now we have this: “The Queen has launched her own brand of posh washing up liquid at a whopping £14.99 a bottle - after it was revealed she loves doing the dishes. Her Majesty has started selling bottles of washing up liquid at her Sandringham estate in Norfolk - for almost ten times the cost of Fairy Liquid. The Natural Dish Wash, which has the scent of 'coastal walks,' has the Royal Sandringham Estate logo on the front of the 500ml bottle.” www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-10635515/Queen-launches-brand-washing-liquid-sale-14-99-Sandringham-estate.htmlThis may not be the best time to put yet more expensive products on the market.

More royal merching
Some official souvenirs that are now available are very highly-priced and look like something that Sarah Ferguson might promote. With high inflation and low disposable income everywhere, I expect that much of the Platinum Jubilee merchandise will soon be reduced to half price – and it will still be expensive! £16 for these Jubilee socks and £25 for five iced biscuits:

More about Queen Victoria's death
Queen Victoria died at her beloved Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, where she had gone for the traditional Christmas visit. She was suffering from osteoarthritis and failing eyesight. She had recently lost a lot of weight. She may also have been suffering from depression because of political and personal events. She had been feeling weak and unwell for some days and receiving what is now known as end of life care. Her eldest son and successor Edward VII and other members of the royal family, including her eldest grandson Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany, were at her deathbed. Illustrations and photographs of the time look rather strange and intrusive to modern eyes. Kaiser Wilhelm is between the new king Edward VII and his son the future George V: Queen Victoria on her deathbed:

Queen Victoria's coffin and the return to London
Queen Victoria's household and servants were permitted to view the dead queen. Around 300 staff passed through the room to see her one last time. She was lifted into her coffin by her successor Edward VII, the Kaiser and the Duke of Connaught on January 25th. Queen Victoria wore a white dress and her wedding veil. She was accompanied in her coffin by mementos that she had ordered to be placed there. They included one of Prince Albert's dressing gowns, a picture of John Brown, a lock of his hair and his mother's wedding ring that he had given her and numerous other photographs and pieces of jewellery. Queen Victoria's coffin was taken to East Cowes, from where the royal yacht Alberta transported it to Portsmouth. The next stage involved a journey on the royal train to London's Victoria station; from there it was taken by gun carriage to Paddington Station and put on a train to Windsor. The funeral procession leaves Osborne House: The arrival at East Cowes:

Watch Queen Victoria's funeral procession
As monarchs do, Queen Victoria left detailed instructions for her funeral: she did not want to lie in state; she wanted a military funeral; she wanted white rather than black cloth to be used.
Queen Victoria's state funeral was held in Windsor on February 2nd 1901. It was attended by a record number of European royals.
There is a film of the funeral procession. There is no sound and the picture quality isn't very good, but it shows the many military personnel that she wanted and the white cloth over her coffin.
King Edward VII and other royals can be identified at 05:26 minutes in.

King George V's funeral procession
Huge crowds turned out on a wet day to see the royal coffin pass by.
The spectators of January 28th 1936 were not under surveillance by lines of police looking out for possible terrorist activities as they would be today.

The funeral procession of Elizabeth I
Queen Elizabeth I died at the age of 69 at Richmond Palace on March 24th 1603. Her embalmed body was brought to Whitehall Palace to lie in state. The funeral took place on April 28. Her coffin was covered in purple velvet and placed on a chariot drawn by four horses. On top of the coffin was a wax effigy of the Queen. Elizabeth's procession from Whitehall to Westminster Abbey was attended by 3,000 mourners and watched by about 200,000 spectators, many of whom would have known no other monarch. Many royal funeral traditions date back to this event.

I was surprised to find that pictures of various Victorian royals were used in advertisements of the time. Queen Victoria was used to sell soap; the Coleman's Mustard advert is from around 1890:

Queen Victoria sells some cocoa
Cadbury and Fry were the two biggest names in the world of chocolate, and both produced drinking chocolate. One advertisement from around 1890 shows Queen Victoria and Princess Beatrice having a cup of cocoa on the royal train; another celebrates the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 1897:
