There has been much speculation about who would be the next monarch after the Queen died: the crown might bypass Prince Charles and go to direct to Prince William or even Prince Harry; Princess Anne would be a good choice too. Avacyn said this a while back: “Charles is unlikely to be king at this point, due to his marriage to Camilla. They might improve if she divorced him, or was to die, mind you.” That is all in the past; Prince Charles has succeeded to the throne and Camilla is his consort. King Charles III can have everything his own way now. “...we need to keep an eye on this, I guess, to see what unfolds.“ What will he do about princes Harry and Andrew? What reforms will he make? What will his proposed slimmed-down monarchy look like? Will he call himself 'Defender of Faith' as he said he might? Lavendel said this four years ago: “Camilla left no wine untested, cake uneaten, at some point Charles had to pull her off discreetly. When she becomes queen, I guess she will order a big cake to kickstart her long reign “ Will Camilla still be seen enjoying cakes and ice cream in public? We must wait and see.

There are some good, relevant posts from 2017 and 2018 on other royal threads. Some of the material is worth repeating. Here is something from me:
“'I think in the firm the Queen is the glue which holds them together and nobody wants to upset an old great grand mother so they wait.'
Lavendel I think you are right. All heck will break loose when the Queen goes.
Someone on the other forum said that the newspaper magnate Rupert Murdoch has been sitting on a lot of scandalous information about the royals, and is not publishing it out of respect for the Queen. He will reveal it all after her death. This is not good. Not only that, but some of the royals will opt out of their duties. It will be everyone’s big chance.”
So, what will Rupert Murdoch reveal now?

Will any letters be burned now?
There are posts on the Royal Façade thread about how the new Queen Alexandra seized and burned some of her mother-in-law Queen Victoria's letters and how Princess Margaret did the same with the Queen Mother's letters.
So who will burn what now? I suspect that Princess Anne might have a go!

Who will be pulling the strings now?
There are many posts about the then Prince Charles in the Royal Façade thread. Now might be a good time to review some of the allegations. What will all the billionaire businessmen who donated to his charities do now? Jimmy Saville and Sir Evelyn de Rothschild seem to be the dominant ones in some old pictures that have new relevance. Sir Evelyn was the Queen's financial adviser. Will he perform the same role for the new king?

The new king has been proclaimed
King Charles III's accession has been signed, sealed and delivered. He is now the monarch. “It might have been me...”

King Charles III the play King Charles III is a future history play that was first performed in 2014. It has been called a must-see and shown in many different theatres in different countries. It was made into a film for TV and first shown in 2017. The plot and current relevance make it suitable for this rather than the Miscellaneous monarchy thread: “The Queen is dead. Charles, paranoid and power obsessed, dissolves Parliament and parks a tank outside Buckingham Palace. While Prince William dithers, his steely and pragmatic wife, Kate, orchestrates a palace coup to save the monarchy and prevent Britain from sliding into civil war.” www.nytimes.com/2014/04/15/theater/a-british-play-imagines-charles-finally-in-charge.htmlRed-haired Prince Harry is still very much a royal in this scene:

More from the play King Charles III
These scenes in which the royals gather around the Queen's coffin and Camilla gives support to King Charles are from a performance of King Charles III that was given in Knoxville, Tennessee in the US in 2019:

Favourites who lose everything
It is not just letters that get destroyed when a monarch dies. Old posts describe what happened to Abdul Karim and William Tallon when Queen Victoria and the Queen Mother died. They became broken men. I suggested that the Queen's staff should learn from history and make contingency plans: “ Plan A would cover procedures to follow after an unexpected dismissal. As we have seen, people can be fired even after years of loyal service. They may lose everything, including the grace and favour homes.
Plan B would cover procedures to follow after the sad event of the Queen’s death. Eviction and banishment of favourites often happens. Look at what happened to butler William Tallon after the Queen Mother died.
Plan C would ensure that there was nothing left lying around to be confiscated after the employee’s own death. Papers, presents...anything that the royals might want back or want destroyed should be stored in a safe place.“ The Queen's dresser and confidante Angela Kelly has not been seen among the senior palace staff who have appeared in public to mourn her death. Will she too lose everything and be cast into the outer darkness? The two 'sisters':

Justin Welby didn't want to preside over the funeral
He told an interviewer this in 2017: “The Archbishop of Canterbury has said he hopes he doesn't have to oversee the Queen's funeral. The Most Rev Justin Welby said that while said it will be an "enormous" event and "the most extraordinary historic moment", he hopes someone else will do it. In an interview with Alastair Campbell for British GQ, the Archbishop was asked if he loses sleep thinking he might be called to preside over the proceedings. Welby said: "I don't lose sleep and I do hope I don't have to do that. "...It's enormous whoever does it - God willing someone else - because it is an enormous public event. But as a parish priest, at every funeral you think about the enormity of it." premierchristian.news/en/news/article/justin-welby-hopes-he-doesn-t-have-to-oversee-queen-s-funeralI wonder how well he will perform later today. Together at Windsor Castle in June this year:

King Charles the intervener
What will King Charles do now? Will he reshape the role of the monarchy as he said he would? He has been called a 'compulsive meddler'! From 2014: “Prince Charles is ready to reshape the monarch’s role when he becomes king and make “heartfelt interventions” in national life in contrast to the Queen’s taciturn discretion on public affairs, his allies have said. In signs of an emerging strategy that could risk carrying over the controversy about his alleged meddling in politics into his kingship, sources close to the heir say he is set to continue to express concerns and ask questions about issues that matter to him, such as the future of farming and the environment, partly because he believes he has a duty to relay public opinion to those in power. “He will be true to his beliefs and contributions,” said a well-placed source who has known him for many years. “Rather than a complete reinvention to become a monarch in the mould of his mother, the strategy will be to try and continue with his heartfelt interventions...”” www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/nov/19/becoming-king-not-silence-prince-charles-allies

One more week of royal mourning
London is slowly getting back to normal and shops etc. are reopening, but the royals will be keeping a low profile until next Tuesday. This is a good opportunity for them to make plans for the future, King Charles especially. How to keep the Commonwealth going? How to deal with the people who want the UK to be a republic? How soon to start planning the coronation? What can be done about the Sussexes? Decisions, decisions:

Something for the coronation?
It is probably just a wild conspiracy theory that Meghan was deliberately put in a position where she would be obscured by a big candle at the recent funeral service, but it might give people ideas! A few boxes of these might come in useful for the coronation next year:

How long to Operation Menai Bridge?
Operation Menai Bridge has replaced Operation London Bridge; it is the detailed plan of action for the procedures to be followed when King Charles dies. I suppose that this name was chosen when he was Prince of Wales. I have been over the Menai Bridge, which connects the Isle of Anglesey to mainland Wales, a few times. The views are spectacular.

The Coronation: 'Value' or 'Essentials' versus 'Finest' or 'De Luxe'
There are rumours that King Charles wants a cut-price, scaled-down coronation. If we think in terms of supermarkets' names for their cheapest and most expensive ranges and in terms of Poundland versus Harrods, we can call it the budget versus luxury issue. We may well get the cheapest option for next year's coronation. This does not seem like a very good idea; it seems like false economy. We should pull all the stops out and give the world the 'Best of British'!

A horrible thought about the coronation
I remember watching the Sussexes' wedding in 2018 and having to turn the sound off when Bishop Michael Curry was preaching. I couldn't take the drivel and waffle! I didn't much like the gospel choir either. They were there at the then Prince Charles's invitation. Then there were the African dancers at Justin Welby's enthronement. They were very good, but didn't seem suitable for the occasion. Presumably Welby will be officiating at the coronation next May. I do hope that he and King Charles won't arrange anything like that for the ceremony: Westminster Abbey is not the right place for it.

The funeral was a rushed affair for us, having to work on that day. Rather annoying.

“At least we have a lot of advanced warning this time. The funeral was a rushed affair for us, having to work on that day. Rather annoying.“ This is a good point Avacyn . Will the ceremony be worth watching though? According to various sources, Operation Golden Orb will involve multi-faith elements, one hour rather than three for the ceremony, 2,000 guests rather than 8,000, peers wearing suits and dresses rather than ceremonial robes... This is what we got last time:

Charles II's coronation
Perhaps Charles III could take some inspiration from the previous holder of this name when it comes to designing his coronation. King Charles II was crowned in Westminster Abbey on April 23rd 1661. He was the last monarch to make the traditional journey from the Tower of London to the Abbey. His coronation portrait depicts him in dress that shows his power, wealth and status. I like his high-heeled shoes: On a white horse and wearing a big hat in his procession:

Cake for Charles but not Camilla!
Just Stop Oil activists smeared chocolate cake into the face of King Charles's waxwork at Madame Tussauds this morning. Camilla didn't get any. This is not fair, considering how many pictures we have on here of Camilla enjoying her cakes!

The sidelining of Princes Andrew and Harry
King Charles plans to ensure via constitutional reform that the two problem princes will not be involved with affairs of state when he is out of the country. He will be soon be going on a very long overseas tour. He wants relatives that he can trust in positions of power. These two don't meet the requirements:

Remembrance Sunday is near
It will be interesting to see which royals are there for the ceremonies on Sunday 13th. Much has changed since things were scaled down because of Covid: we have a new monarch and a new prime minister for example. The Queen kept her distance in 2020:

Food pictures!
The old Cornwalls thread has many pictures of Charles and Camilla publicly enjoying food and drink. I suspect that they will not be giving us much more of this now as they must remember their new position, so we must mine the past for the best specimens. Their visit to Florence in 2017 produced some good ones. “Is all this for us? You shouldn't have!” I wonder why they are so interested in this bread:
