Best-before dates etc.
“I also have started to use the food stocks from 2020, because they are starting to go past their best before date.” This is a big issue. I am doing this too. Much of it is items I would not normally buy, at least in any quantity. If we only knew exactly what to expect, we could make better decisions. At least my stock is much better organised than this: All of this is a learning curve, and we are having to relearn what previous generations knew. A chain of knowledge has been lost, which is a tragedy when you think about it.

There are some old-style tips online.
It has indeed been a learning curve. Creating this thread was a very good idea.

Spring onions mark 2
The spring onions in water are still producing shoots. It is only garnish, but every little helps. Unlike the carrot tops, being immersed in water doesn't rot them. However, the bulbs are getting skinnier and skinnier. I suppose that this is to be expected. I have bought another bunch; I will eat half and grow the other half.

Getting ready for 2024
This is not the best time of year to stock up as the shops have removed many items to make way for Christmas goods. However, it is a good time to check supplies, do some research and plan ahead for the coming year. There are many lists and suggestions online that can be used as a starting point and checklist. Some of them are not for townspeople though: I will give the archery items and animal traps a miss! I can't do much with building supplies either.

Online 'resilience academy'
In addition to the resilience website, the government is setting up an online "resilience academy" to train volunteers and businesses on how they can help when a national crisis hits. Is all this just precautionary or do they know that bad times are coming?

Threads the film
The name 'Threads' was in the news recently when it was promoted as a new alternative to Twitter. Threads is also the name of an apocalyptic made-for-TV film from 1984; it gives an account of a nuclear war between Warsaw Pact countries and the Soviet Union and the subsequent devastating effect the aftermath has on Britain. It is said to be really horrific to watch. Once the public learns what is going to happen, there is much panic buying. Emergency powers are enacted, travel is restricted and officials take refuge in underground bunkers. Up to 30 million people are killed in the UK after the detonation, and everything breaks down. Since money has no value, food becomes the only form of currency. It is awarded for labour and withheld as punishment. The more people who die, the more food there is to go around. Details of the horrors are given in the WiKi article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threads_(1984_film)

Did you know there was a recently released film on Netflix, called "Leave The World Behind," which has the USA hit with a cyber attack. I have yet to watch it. Obama had a hand in the making of the film.

I haven't seen this one, but cyber attacks seem much more likely than any zombie apocalypse!
Note that the new government website will give tips on coping with such attacks: we had better download as much information as we can when it is set up as the site might not be accessible when we need it most.

Shoot, I forgot to watch it... I still have it downloaded, ready to go. It might be a case of not just downloading the information, but printing it up as well. Do you know you will have electricity to power your computer in a potential crisis?

Stash the cash!
Today's failure of Sainsbury's and Tesco's IT systems meant that many stores became cash only – and the nearby ATM machines ran out of money. This helps the Don't Kill Cash campaigners, but it caused much inconvenience to many shoppers. It really is a good idea for people who normally pay by card to carry an emergency supply of cash. Queuing for cash in London:

The spring onions are finally finished
The green shoots became so small they looked like needles and the bulbs shrank to nothing.
It was an interesting experiment that provided some garnsh over many weeks.
I might start another batch soon.
