Amethysts
“...isn't the pope meant to wear an Amethyst ring, as a protection against becoming drunk?“ Avacyn this is timely as the amethyst is said to be associated with the month of February. I am not sure about the Pope, but Roman Catholic bishops have their episcopal rings set with amethysts and this confirms what you said about drunkenness: “The spiritual meaning of Amethyst is groundedness, tranquility, and calm. The literal meaning of Amethyst is “not intoxicated” – its name translates from the Greek word améthystos.“ Amethysts come in a range of shades of purple. I wonder whether the stronger colours offer better protection against getting drunk than the pale crystals do:

Purple crystals in the brooch
In 2017, Princess Michael of Kent wore a brooch that attracted much negative attention: “The wife of Prince Michael of Kent, the Queen's first cousin, was pictured arriving at Buckingham Palace wearing a brooch on her left shoulder which appeared to be a piece of 'Blackamoor' jewellery, depicting the bust of a black person with an opulent gold crown and bust, embellished with purple crystals.” They were probably amethysts:

The Purple Heart is a US military award which is given to those wounded in the hands of the enemy or given to the next of kin of soldiers who have died in military service. There is a Military Order of the Purple Heart (est. 1932) which is composed of wounded war veterans and former POW's.
Recipients of the Purple Heart include John Kerry, Senator John McCain, former director of the FBI Robert Mueller III.
The author of Slaughterhouse-Five Kurt Vonnegut was awarded a Purple Heart after World War 2, during which he was captured by the Germans not long after the Battle of the Bulge (1944).

Political purple in the US: John Kerry
John Kerry 'earned' three Purple Hearts. His entitlement is disputed. There is something sinister about him. A purple outfit in Bali in 2013 and a purple tie in Paris in 2015:

Political purple in the US: two joke products
The Purple Heart is awarded for war injuries sustained from enemy action. The Purple Owie, or fake purple heart, was named in honour of John Kerry, who is said not to deserve his medals. Presumably it is Republicans who would think that these are funny:

Political purple in the US: John Kerry again
Purple really is everywhere. Purple lighting and backgrounds may or may not mean anything but they feature in many pictures. John Kerry at the Miami Dade college in 2019:

Celebrities in purple: the Beckhams
There are many pictures of royals and celebrities wearing purple that are probably not very significant; they just happened to choose that colour on the day. The Beckhams chose purple outfits for their wedding reception in 1999. It looks a little strange:

Celebrities in purple: Alan Rickman
Alan Rickman played the part of an actor who played the part of a purple-headed alien called Dr Lazarus in the 1999 film Galaxy Quest. There is an element of illusion in that real aliens take the actors and their fictional TV adventures for real. Some of the posters had a purple theme:

Prince Andrew and a purple connection
“Like other senior royals, the Prince is accompanied at all times by armed police bodyguards. Details will have been entered into a pocketbook as 'Purple Four One' — Andrew's Scotland Yard call sign — and travelling to Surrey with Woking in a bracket perhaps alongside. The times will also be noted. Andrew could easily have said that his protection officers could verify his movements that day.” www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7695233/Videos-Prince-Andrew-partying-nightclubs-beautiful-young-women-French-Riviera.htmlWhat a coincidence! Deception and illusion certainly feature in his case.

Purple XLI and another prince
Prince Andrew's police call sign is 'Purple 41'. 41 is XLI in Roman numerals. By coincidence, the singer Prince – who appears above – performed his song Purple Rain using a purple guitar for the Super Bowl XLI halftime show in 2007: “Prince performs in the pouring rain in Miami during Super Bowl XLI. “

Political purple in the US: Jill Biden
Purple has a special political meaning in the US: a 'purple state' is a swing state, one with equal red (Republican) and blue (Democrat) supporters. The result could swing either way in an election. Perhaps purple is also used to appeal to voters on both sides. Jill Biden has worn purple on several occasions:

Invictus, the Invictus Games, the Invictus poem and I AM generated many posts in the past, on the old CC Forum in particular. There is a tangled web of connections here. This thread highlights some purple aspects. There was a fundraising gala for the 2018 Invictus Games UK team at the Dorchester Hotel :

Purple Invictus: Invictus Games again
By coincidence, the BBC coverage was directed by Richard Carr's company Purple Purple Productions: “In 2018 I directed the BBC Events studio presentation for the Invictus Games for the third time. On this occasion, the event was based in Sydney. Previously, in 2014, I directed the BBC's coverage of the inaugural games from Olympic Park in London, then In 2017 the event moved to Canada, and we had a week of live shows from downtown Toronto.” purplepurple.myportfolio.com/invictus-games

Illusion and deceit seem very relevant to the current media battle going on between the Sussexes and the other royals. The DM chose purple for the TV transmissions of Meghan's interview:

Prince Harry and the purple paint
From May 2015: “Prince Harry showed off his sense of humour when he planted a purple handprint on a royal photographer's head in New Zealand on Friday. He was visiting the Turn Your Life Around Trust for at-risk youths in Auckland when his hand was painted bright purple so that he could put his handprint on a mural. With a smirk on his face, though, he quickly turned around and put his hand on the head of photographer Arthur Edwards, making everyone in the room crack up.“ www.popsugar.co.uk/celebrity/Watch-Prince-Harry-Put-Purple-Paint-Handprint-Photographer-Head-37491075

Today is International Women's Day. It appears that the theme of this event has historically been the colour Purple.
The significance of this colour with respect to women's day is vague, but various sources state that it represents justice, dignity, equality, and the future.
Below is the banner for 2020 accompanied by the ribbon.

Another amethyst and another deception
Hello aletheia! Creating this thread was a very good idea. I had no idea there were so many significant associations, good and bad, for this colour. Here is something chosen just for its prettiness – although this mushroom is called the Amethyst Deceiver:

Masonic purple: regalia for the well-dressed brother
There are shops that sell stuff masons like. An assortment of masonic regalia and gifts can also be found online. You can even get a purple hat, a collar, a tie, a sash, an apron, cuffs, cuff-links, rings, gloves etc. on eBay. Purple masonic gear seems particularly popular in the US. Purple transport: the Elizabeth Line
Crossrail is a railway construction project. A new line will run from west to east through central London. It is behind schedule because of the virus. Crossrail has been renamed the Elizabeth Line. The colour purple was chosen because of its royal associations – and because many other good colours are already in use!

Lewis Carroll used purple ink
Lewis Carroll used his favourite purple ink for writing in his journals, inscriptions and many other purposes: “Dodgson's private letters, usually written in purple ink, were more than occasionally works of art; when addressed to his young friends, they were fanciful creations, self-contained microcosms of Wonderlands.” www.oxforddnb.com/view/10.1093/ref:odnb/9780198614128.001.0001/odnb-9780198614128-e-7749The deception and illusion associations are very relevant here. Two examples of Carroll's purple productions:

Episcopal purple and Archbishop Justin Welby
Ed Miliband wore a purple tie and Camilla a purple coat at the enthronement of the new Archbishop of Canterbury in 2013. Is this just a coincidence? There is a lot of deception and illusion in his case.
