The Reform UK mayoral candidate
Reform UK didn't have a candidate in the previous mayoral election because they wanted to suppport Laurence Fox and not split the vote. A lot has happened since then, and such deals seem to be off now. The Reform UK candidate is Howard Cox; he launched his mayoral campaign last May. I am not sure that he can beat Sadiq Khan, but he could take third place.

Laurence Fox gets his deposit back
“It might be a strategic mistake. He likely knew there was no chance, and this way he can duck out without losing face.“ You could be right: he has lost several deposits along the way, and there is no point in standing again if there is no chance of getting many votes. He would just lose more money. There was no Reform UK candidate in the previous London Mayoral Election; this time they have someone. He will probably get the votes that Laurence Fox might otherwise have got. Also, last time people could vote for their first and second preferences; this time they will get only one vote. My polling card arrived today. I have the necessary photo ID so I am all set. I see a lot of candidates here, and there is the potential for a vote split happening. We should be braced for Sadiq somehow getting in again, but I wonder if it will be questioned heavily if he does. The voter ID element is a positive thing, though. It is easy to do, and a simple process. I have done it already. It will make it harder to cheat, so hopefully we will see Khan dislodged. He is a terrible thing for British politics in general.

Three weeks from today!
“I see a lot of candidates here...” There were 20 names on the list in the previous mayoral election! At least one of the Corbyn brothers was expected to stand this time, but they have both given it a miss. Sadiq Khan is very much the favourite with the bookies. I wonder how many votes this candidate will get:

The London Assembly elections
Londoners will be voting not only for the next Mayor of London but also for two members of the London Assembly.
There are 25 Assembly seats waiting for the winners: 11 of them are for people who will represent London-wide interests and 14 are for constituency representatives.
Reform UK have 15 candidates for the London-wide ballot and they also have a candidate in each constituency.
Laurence Fox is still on the list of London-wide candidates.

Rejoin EU and the London elections
The Rejoin EU Party were crowdfunding for the Mayor of London election earlier this year, but their candidate appears to have dropped out. They still have some people on the list for the London Assembly though, I still sometimes see a few committed protesters with their EU flags in Parliament Square, but I think that Rejoin is losing support.

Tsar said this in October 2021: “I see Johnson being in power for the foreseeable - only because Labour seem to be trying to make themselves as unelectable as possible.” Things have changed a bit since then!

London election results
I wasn't intending to stay up next Thursday to watch the London election results, which is a good thing as they won't be announced until Saturday May 4th.
While they were counted electronically last time, for some reason they will be counted by hand on the Saturday.
It will be interesting to see how well Reform UK candidates do.

Tomorrow
I asked two people if they were ready to vote. One thought that it was the general election, the other asked what was happening tomorrow. They are both professionals! I shall be very surprised if this man doesn't win again:

I shall be very surprised if this man doesn't win again: He isn't being elected, but selected. When there is a low turnout, It is easy to cheat and manipulate the election. It doesn't take much to add a few "votes" here and there, and get enough to have the candidate you want in.
When the turnout is high, it gets much more difficult. the bigger the turnout, the harder it will be.
Also, the lack of general awareness of political events is disturbing. It's another way to manipulate the political process..

Those are interesting ideas. Turnout was indeed low; many people seem to have not known or not cared about the London elections.

Laurence Fox: another lost deposit
Laurence Fox stood as a London-wide candidate in the recent London Assembly elections. He lost his deposit because his share of the vote was very low. He is going to move out of London now that Sadiq Khan is in power again. Having a good time at the recent far-right St. George's Day rally:
