In real terms, the system will carry on the same way it always has. This election was never going to change that. The world will continue to turn and there'll be no dramatic change in the regime's policies.
But there's symbolic stuff going on above that. I don't care for Trump the man, but it was never really about him. When the neolib media goes after Trump, it's not about him, it's about the tens of millions of voiceless people who Trump gave a voice to in 2015-16 and in return who put him into office.
And for the most part, they're excellent people. They come from similar places to me and see the world in a very similar way to me, so I know why they think the way they do. I know how disappointed, hurt, and anxious they feel, and I'm sorry for them. I may disagree with them on a few issues, but they're my people, their hearts are absolutely in the right place, and I love them.
Regardless of Trump's lack of actual policy gains for them, he's their symbol, and symbolically, defeating Trump was about defeating these people; about putting them back in their place. I have no sympathy for Trump, but it's horrible to watch the revolting media and politicians revelling in their symbolic victory and rubbing his supporters' faces into the dirt.
If I spoke to a Trump supporter, I'd tell them that it always hurts when things don't go the way we want. But it isn't Donald Trump they really love: it's the things they thought he was defending. Those things still exist, will continue to exist when Biden is in the White House, and are far more important and valuable than any politician could ever be.
